Wear, Stare, Rare

W. Sean A.

Sean is a local sustainable garment designer based in Sydney who has a passion for sneakers. We’re interviewing him to give us the low-down on his most prized pairs of sneakers from his collection.

.

Hey Sean, firstly, I’d love to hear the story behind how you got into sneakers & sneaker culture?

I have been into sneakers pretty much most of my life. I wouldn't say I am a collector, nor involved within the industry & culture as much as people think - I personally just see myself as an enthusiast and hobbyist that appreciates a great sneaker design.

.

What’s your first choice for ‘Wear’: sneakers you enjoy wearing the most?

I have been wearing the Nike x Cactus Plant Flea Market 'Sponge By You' Blazer (2020) a lot recently.

Why did you choose this pair?

I've been wearing these sneakers a lot and being a certified fabric/textile nerd - I love sneakers that contain many forms of fabrics, textures and of course colour - not to mention the incorporation of exposed foam. I love what Cynthia Lu has achieved with CPFM and when you combine it with the timeless silhouette of the Blazer - it'll most likely be a home run. I also love wearing these whenever I am in the workshop as the traction and comfort of the Blazer provides me a lot of function when I use the pedals of my machines.

.

What a fab choice. Now, for ‘Stare’: sneakers you wear to flex & show off your elite taste in sneakers?

I personally wouldn't wear sneakers to 'flex or show-off' but the sneaker that seems to get attention (not even sneakerheads but people in-general) are definitely the 'Nike SB Dunk Low What The Paul' (2021).

Again, I am a big fan of mismatched sneakers that use a variety of fabrics, not to mention P-Rod has been an inspiration to me since I was young.

And how’d you get your hands on them?

I was actually extremely lucky and won a raffle to purchase these for retail!

And for your most coveted pair, ‘Rare’ what are they?

I'd say these are the most recent grails I've been lucky to actually grab, they are the Nike Air Force 1 'Insideout Philippines' (2006).

Why are these your grail pair of kicks & how long did it take you to hunt them down?

Funnily, I am not a fan of Air Force 1's - if you know me, you know how much I despise the model. But with my background, I sort of had a soft spot for this pair, as it gives me a lot of nostalgic memories of being a kid with not enough money to grab sneakers I always wanted. I've probably been on & off trying to grab these since I was young, when these first came out in 2006. As I grew, the supply of these became more scarce, and it was next to (near) impossible to grab these in my size in a wearable condition. Literally, last week a local seller in Sydney sold these to me in DS condition, so I had to grab them.

And finally, what would you say your sneaker motto is?

Wear them, don't overthink it & be thankful :-)
