I.E is a mysterious name that's been popping up in our local hip hop scene. Signed to independent music label WVS, and having only put out a few releases, everything from his sound, visuals or style is moody, dark and sparks curiosity. I.E's latest track 'Distance' continues to do just that and get you all the feels.
With his album due to be released later next month, we spoke to I.E to find out who he is and what he's working on this year, in addition to asking him to put together a playlist of some of his favourite tracks.
There seems to be quite an enigma surrounding you. Could you tell us who I.E is?
I.E. is me, but also a persona or a character I created as a means to express myself creatively.
What made you decide to keep mysterious and anonymous?
Because I want the attention to be on the music rather than myself. People's perceptions of an artists are largely driven by their appearance so I wanted to remove that and make it about the music. Plus, a sense of anonymity goes a long way to removing inhibitions and allowing me to be any kind of artist I want to be.
What inspires you musically and aesthetically?
J.Cole, PartyNextDoor and Tory Lanez. Miami in the early cocaine 80s era.
You've put out a few singles now, are there plans for an album coming out soon?
I'm actually finishing off the first EP right now with Dopamine. The project will be available end of July.
What should we expect from the album?
I think a lot of questions like these will be answered when you hear the EP - it's a journey of my inner-self's day to day battles insecurity and victories, like my demons having a conversation with each other. It will really tell people who I am and I think a lot of people will be able to relate the music and message.
For those who haven't heard your music, how would you describe I.E to them?
The vibes I create are moody but energetic, emotional and relatable.
Tell me about the playlist you've compiled.
Late night drive.
I.E is wearing Mark Of The Beast Longsleeve from Pleasures, and TV T-shirt from Pleasures.
